Bookings

Our Track office deals with all bookings. Online credit card booking is available, as well as direct bank transfer (internet banking) via e-mail..

For all bookings, start by checking availability. You only need to have the start date available (this includes the other days/nights on either package). For more details visit our bookings page.

NB. Your booking start date is the date of your 5.45pm bus pick-up. You start walking the day after. This means you need four or two days (depending on package) following your start night. For example on the four day walk, a Monday night start will mean you stay Thursday night at Otanerito and reach Akaroa about 1.00pm Friday. On the two day walk a Monday night start will mean you stay Tuesday night at Stony Bay and reach Akaroa around 3.00pm on Wednesday.

Walks Available

The Banks Peninsula Track is a 35km circular walk around the remote and beautiful south eastern bays of Banks Peninsula.

Both our walks start and finish in Akaroa on Banks Peninsula. Akaroa is a scenic 80kms drive from Christchurch on the east coast of the South Island.

Four day 12 per day $210 off peak - $240 peak, per person
Two day 4 per day $140 off peak - $160 peak, per person
Peak season is from Christmas to Easter

A non-refundable standby price of $190 for four day, and $120 for two day, is available for walkers starting their walk within 5 days of booking. See bookings for details.

GST Price Increase - Please note that from 1st October 2010, prices will increase on all four day packages by $5.00, and on all two day packages by $3.00. All bookings made before 1st October (either by full payment or 10% deposit) will only be charged at the current rate.

Restrictions.

Our walks are suitable for a wide range of walkers, but are not recommended for children under five years of age. However if you do wish to walk with younger children, please contact our office using this form.

Transport to Track.

From Akaroa there is free bus transport to the first hut at Onuku Farm.. The Banks Peninsula Track bus departs the information centre at 5.45pm for the fifteen minute bus trip out of Akaroa to Onuku Farm Trampers Hut. A short orientation talk precedes bus departure, and you are issued with your guide booklet, which has maps, directions, local stories, and other useful information for your walk. Please note - there is a ten minute walk from road end to hut.

Christchurch has an international airport with direct flights to all the major Australian cities as well as many other international destinations. As the major South Island airport, it also has good connecting flights to almost all other NZ destinations.

Starting the Track

Your Track booking is for the 5.45pm bus from Akaroa to Onuku Farm. You stay the night there and start walking the following morning.

Free car parking for walkers is available at the BP Track car park at Mt Vernon Lodge. This is one kilometre up Rue Balguerie from the main crossroads at the Akaroa Information Centre, which is our bus departure point. At the top of Rue Balguerie, turn left on Purple Peak Rd, crossing the bridge and take the left turn into Mt Vernon after about fifty metres. The carpark is also suitable for campervans.

The walking route conveniently passes this carpark at Mt Vernon as you re-enter Akaroa at the end of your walk.

Allow 30 minutes for parking and walking back down to the Information Centre.

TIP. Leave passenger(s) and packs at the Information Centre/Akaroa which you pass on your way to carpark to save carrying packs down to bus pickup.

Pack Cartage Options

Pack cartage is available as an option on the first and last of the four sections of Track. These are the two longest sections and also those with most ascent and descent. Payment is by cash, no pre-booking required. A standard charge of $10 per pack is subject to the minimum daily fees being met, as detailed below.

Section 1. Onuku Farm to Flea Bay. 1 - 9 packs $90. 9+ packs, $10 per pack. Arrival of packs, by 2.00pm.

Section 4. Otanerito to Akaroa. 1 - 6 packs $60. 6+ packs, $10 per pack. Arrival of packs, by 1.00pm.

Fee includes storage until 5.00pm, Akaroa Information Centre.

TIP. If you have a vehicle parked at Mt Vernon, keep your keys with you as you pass Mt Vernon 30 mins before reaching your packs at Info Centre.

Additional luggage can be stored at Akaroa Information Centre during walk.

Full pack cartage

An option of full pack cartage exists for groups on the 4 day walk. The cost for this option is $630 for up to 12 x 15kg maximum packs. (This fee includes a carbon credit donation, paid to Hinewai Reserve, as well as storage at Akaroa Info Centre). Must be booked in advance.

NB. Remember you start walking following your first nights accommodation, so you need either four or two days (depending on package) after your start date.

All walkers have access to the four accommodations - two day walkers have their overnight stays at Onuku and Stony Bay.

Facilities - What's Provided

All accommodations have fully equipped kitchens.

This includes stoves, fridges, pans, cutlery, crockery, cleaning materials, t-towels, tin openers...etc.

You do not need to bring any kitchen items. There are also outdoor barbecues available.

All accommodations have comfortable beds, (with pillows and clean pillowcases), woodstove heating, and bathroom facilities with hot showers and flush toilets.

What You Need to Bring

Essential.

Backpack. Boots. Clothing including adequate outdoor clothing for all weather.

Personal necessities (toiletries, medicines), towel, cash for shop and pack cartage payments.

Sleeping bag.

(Sleeping bags can be hired for $30 per trip. Bags are washed at Akaroa Laundry between each hire. Hire should be arranged in advance (preferably by e-mail).

Recommended.

Torch, light indoor footwear, water bottle, swimwear, daypack (if using pack cartage).

Catering - Food and Drink

The Track is Self - catering, with the following options

On your first evening at Onuku, a ten minute walk from the hut takes you to the 'Bush Cafe' which offers a

'Homecooked Dinner with Dessert' for $25.

Operates for Banks Peninsula Track walkers from 1st October to 31st March. It is run by Chris and Aya. Pre-bookings are essential, payment by cash. Phone 021 520 164

Drinks and Chocolate available at Flea Bay Cottage

Trampers' shops en route at Stony Bay and Otanerito Beach.

These two shops are well stocked and open to walkers whenever they arrive. They are restocked daily, and provide sufficient choice and quantity to cater for individuals or groups. Expect to pay prices roughly similar to a remote country dairy. As well as a good supply of Cold drinks, stocks include,

Extra Activities

Kayaking option on Pohatu Marine Reserve. $15 per person, incredible value.

Shireen Helps operates a kayaking business at Flea Bay, part of Pohatu Marine Reserve. Wildlife often seen include Hectors dolphin, penguins and heaps of seals. Discounts are offered to Track walkers making this the best value guided kayaking trip you are ever likely to undertake. The most usual time is in the morning after staying the night at Flea Bay, but it may still be available to 2 day walkers as they pass through. Subject to sea conditions

Evening penguin tour (4 day walk, seasonal, approx Oct - Jan) at Flea Bay. Free.

On the second evening of the four day walk, Francis Helps invites Track walkers to join him on his evening tour of the white flippered penguin nesting boxes that he has established and maintains on the farm. This is the largest mainland colony of Little Penguin in NZ. The tours are seasonal, spring and early summer, stopping around the end of January. Free, (optional conservation donation)
