The Banks Peninsula Track
follows a stunningly diverse track of 35 km through pasture and forest as you explore the remote outer bays of Banks Peninsula. Its route includes a spectacular volcanic coastline, native bush, waterfalls and sandy beaches with two crossings of the crater rim high above Akaroa Harbour as you leave and return to Akaroa.
Self-guided walking or hiking
Our two self-guided options offer you many of the comforts of guided walks such as hot showers and small numbers, combined with the independence of the freedom walker. Both walks cover the same distance following the same track route and visit the same accommodations but at a different pace - you choose the way you want to walk!
Location and Walk Options
The Banks Peninsula Track starts and ends in the picturesque harbourside town of Akaroa, a 75 min drive from Christchurch and Christchurch International Airport.
Our four day walk around the 'wildside' southeastern bays of Banks Peninsula has become one of New Zealand's classic walking holidays. Its diversity of landscape and accommodation make it truly one of the great NZ walks alongside the DOC featured 'Great Walks'. Enjoy small numbers and take the time to explore the side tracks, swim in the bays, watch the marine wildlife of this stunning coast... or simply relax in your own way in beautiful surroundings.
Our two day walk is one of the most spectacular hikes or tramps in New Zealand. It combines hill and coastal walking at their best, making this a great option for those who like to spend much of their day tramping. Please note. This trip covers the same distance as the four day walk and is therefore much more strenuous! Do not consider it as an easier alternative!
Further options available include full or standard pack cartage and storage, a great kayaking trip, sleeping bag hire, or the guaranteed privacy of a double room with linen and towels provided. These options can be explored thru 'Walk Details'
From next season (Oct 2017 - Apr 2018) the current 4 day option will be replaced by a 3 day option.
2017/18 Season - The New Route.
Next season the route will be unchanged until you leave Stony Bay at the start of day 3. From Stony Bay, instead of heading round the coast and then up the Otanerito Valley, walkers will follow the Armstrong Valley track inland to the Stony Bay Saddle and then rejoin the Purple Peak Track down into Akoroa as they do today. The total walk will be about 27km vs the current 35km.
The walk will therefore become a three night and three day experience, with a two day option.
The third day starts on the Armstrong farm - a lovely mixture of open valley, bush and creek. Walkers then enter Hinewai and pass through a variety of different areas of both regenerating and mature bush (not dissimilar to the current experience on day 4). Highlights include Kanuka, Tree Ferns and some glorious mature Red Beech with a mixed understory of “too many natives to mention”. Parts of this track follow the route taken by the early settlers travelling between Akoroa and Stony Bay.

All the usual optional extras - private room , sleeping bags, and pack cartage will be available. The walk will cost $260 pp. The season will run from 1st October 2017 to 1st May 2018. On line booking will be available from mid May. In the meantime we are taking bookings via email enquiries to Mafi at the office email@example.com.
Self - Catering
The Track is self-catering with fully equipped kitchens. You don't need to bring any kitchen items.
